Westberry Elementary School students in Kindersley took part in their annual Drive Away Hunger Campaign last week at the school.

The week-long event was put in place by staff from both Westberry and Elizabeth schools in order to gather donations for the Kindersley Food Bank.

Students and parents were invited to bring non-perishable food and/or cash donations to their child's classroom for the initiative. Wednesday is the day for when the donations will be picked up, and school staff invite the students to bring donations until then if they so please.

"It's always well received. I think this is pretty close to what we received last year," explained Chris Oscar, principal of Westberry Elementary School. "It goes by weight and that's how we figure out how much [Kindersley Food Bank] have received."

Principal Oscar also mentioned how the event gets the children engaged in learning to help others, and how much enthusiasm they have towards the program. "In our school, we have virtues we teach for different months," said Oscar. "A couple of the most important virtues, in my opinion, are kindness and empathy. So, we do a lot of teaching regarding families who need food both locally and internationally."

Drive Away Hunger Campaign perfectly coincides with the Thanksgiving Day weekend - giving children the opportunity to learn the importance of helping others during time of need.
