Forward Emma Tremblay netted a hat-trick this afternoon powering the Saskatoon Prairie Blaze past the Regina Junior Rebels 5-0 to hoist the inaugural Bourgault Cup.
Anica Gauthier scored and added an assist while Makalya Hood also notched a goal in the Saskatchewan Junior Female Hockey League's championship game at Outlook's Jim Kook Recreation Complex. Prairie Blaze Goalie Mackenzie Bloom stopped all 13 shots sent her way for the shutout.
"It's pretty special, I'm not going to lie," Prairie Blaze Head Coach Dwayne Horner said moments after the win. "Lots of smiling facings down there so it feels good."
Gauthier opened the scoring early in the first frame for Saskatoon converting on a partial breakaway beating Regina's Elliana Mckay blocker side. Tremblay scored her first of the contest with 7:43 left in the first jumping on a rebound off a shot by Kalli Stegemann making it 2-0 for the Prairie Blaze.
Regina replaced Mckay in net with Ryleigh Carson to start the second period, although offence for both teams came to a grinding halt in the second period, combining for only 12 shots.
Tremblay found the back of the net early in the third providing a key insurance goal for Saskatoon pushing the lead to 3-0. Around the midway point of the period, Tremblay hit the post with a shot that trickled onto the goal line before Carson's stick tapped it in to complete the hat-trick. Hood pushed the game to 5-0 capitalizing on a breakaway beating Carson's blocker side.
"They were all excited and ready to jump on them in the third," he said. "We said we had done enough good things to play with that lead and we didn't want to change up too much and wanted to stay on the gas."
Saskatoon extended their winning streak to 18 games with the win and finished their season and playoffs with an overall record of 19-1. Their lone loss came against Regina back on Oct. 21, 4-3 in the second game of the season.
"Every game takes about 1,000 checkmarks to win," he said. "If you fill your sheet with more checkmarks than the other team there's a good chance you'll come out on top."
