The weekend is almost here, which means senior hockey in a couple of West Central rinks.

The Sask West Hockey League started up a few weeks back, the Sask Valley Hockey League fired their season up last weekend, and now it is the White Mud Hockey Leagues turn as they have two local teams this year in the Eatonia Huskies and Leader Flyers.

West Central Online reached out to Riley Feiffer with the re-formed Flyers, and he talked about how the team returned to the Saskatchewan senior hockey landscape.

"Basically, just some of us younger guys here in town, we have always wanted to see the Flyers come back," said Feiffer, "We approached some of the older guys who were involved before, and they told us that if you find the players, you find the money, and once you find that you let us know and we'll get things going."

The team is a good mix of older and younger players, some just coming out of minor hockey. Lots of the players likely have a decent memory of the last Flyers team in town, but it's been so long that there is no doubt a lot of interest in seeing the team finally back in 2022.

They had to cancel their only exhibition game, meaning the Flyers are jumping right into the fire come Saturday against Shaunavon.

"Lots of buzz. Lots of people disappointed when the exhibition game got cancelled," said Feiffer, looking ahead to the potential crowd for the game, "I'd bet money that it's going to be pretty packed in there."

The team dropped out several years prior to COVID, and interestingly enough the pandemic was the kickstart to get the team back when so many other stories saw their final page due to the trying times these past few years. Many of the players were looking for something to do, and that played a big part in the initial interest they saw to the bring the Flyers back.

All the hard work is about to pay off, as the Flyers open their White Mud Hockey League schedule at home on Saturday at 8:00 pm.
