Ice and snow are not the only winter irritations Old Man Winter brings with him. Along with the ice and snow, the reality of winter-induced ailments is at the forefront of many people's minds.

Dr. Torr, Chief Medical Officer of the Heartland Health Region describes Whooping Cough as one of the major conditions of which people facing winter must be aware.

Torr advises all individuals -especially those who are very young, the elderly, or the medically predisposed to illness- to get the vaccine.

Characteristics of classic Whooping Cough (Whooping Cough caught without having been treated for a vaccine) include fever and a severe cough.  Spasms of continuous coughing can also cause severe fatigue, shortness of breath and vomiting.

Whooping Cough can be treated with anti-biotics, however in an anti-immunized case is very difficult to treat.

Torr advises getting treated with the vaccine to not only improve one's personal well-being but also to improve the well-being of others who may be susceptible to the illness.
