Yesterday, while the west central region dealt with the blistering spring storm, there was an update regarding the variants of concern (VOC) in the west central region. Over the weekend a single case of a VOC was detected in the region and yesterday a second VOC case was reported. What isn't made clear in the data break downs are if the VOC cases are in the Central-West 1 or Central-West 2 sub regions. Which of the variants the cases are won't be known until they're sequenced by the national lab in Winnipeg.

COVID-19 cases are screened for VOC depending on a positive case's contact tracing history.

Over the past week VOC cases have climbed steadily in southern Saskatchewan. In yesterdays COVID-19 update Moose Jaw was specifically signaled out for the rise of VOC cases in the area. Since last week the Regina region has been under stricter health protocols as cases in the region. As of yesterday the Regina region was the location of more than half of Saskatchewan's total active cases.

The most troubling news to emerge from the rise of VOC cases is a change in the average age of ICU patients being treated for COVID-19 complications. An increase in younger patients entering the ICU has Dr. Shahab and SHA CEO Scott Livingstone concerned.

"To see anybody in ICU is a concern, but with younger patients, we are seeing that," said Saskatchewan Health Authority CAO Scott Livingstone. "They're staying in ICU because they're able to fight, they're healthier individuals than some of the older individuals that have been hospitalized, been put in ICU, and unfortunately have passed."

While the VOC are transmitted easier, Health Officials have been eager to point to the fact that the health measures we're accustomed with do help with slowing transmission. Residents are reminded to:

  • Wear your mask in all public places including all workplaces
  • Wash non-medical masks daily
  • Maintain physical distancing
  • Wash your hands frequently
  • Reduce activities outside of your home.
  • If you are able to work from home, work from home at this time

Health officials are also urging Saskatchewan residents to a void travel to Regina and Moose Jaw if at all possible.
