The Unity Knights of Columbus Unity #5707 are no stranger to community donations, and another nearly $1300 announced for the club will help them stay on track with the good deeds.

The most recent charitable gaming grants in the province were announced on Wednesday. Unity's local Knights of Columbus were awarded a grant of $1,245.75, as part of $3,429.86 total going towards clubs and groups in Unity.

One of their recent donations saw $500 towards Unity Kidsport. Current charity appeal chairman, and past Grand Knight Richard Colbow was part of the cheque presentation back on November 27.

According to the government release, charities aren't required to apply for the grants, instead, seeing the amount of each grant paid out after a calculation from the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority. The dollar amounts are, "based on financial reports and other information submitted by the group or organization as part of SLGA's charitable gaming licensing process", and, "equal 25 per cent of the net revenue raised by each charitable event, up to a maximum of $100,000 per group or organization annually."

Because this money is a kick-back of sorts from the SLGA , Colbow recalled activities in the past year that would have contributed to the fund. Their bunnock tournament in August was a hit.

"We had a raffle, so I believe some of that money possibly came from the SLGA 25% net profit." shared Colbow as the raffle featured bunnock bones and a $100 bill. "We raised a substantial amount of money. From those proceeds, one of the things we donated money to was Kidsport."

The above cheque presentation wasn't the only one Colbow was privy too. Like many of their councils, the Unity Knight's of Columbus mainly operate as a way to give back to the community.

"In addition to the $500 to Kidsport, we did another $500 to the Unity Courtesy Car, and then $1000 to each of the three schools in Unity," said Colbow. "Then we did another $1000 to long-term care in Unity for a sound system, for entertainment purposes." he finished as the group also made a separate donation to the Unity and District Health Centre.

The council also made a significant donation back in September. Separate donations of $1633.20 and $3500 to the local food bank likely helped them get on track into this busy time of year, and allows the Knights of Columbus #5707 to plan their next good deed around Unity.
