U15 AA

In game one of their best of three series against the Martensville AA Marauders, the U15 AA West Central Wheat Kings played a back and forth affair. The game was scoreless after one, then Cam Perlnger scored on the powerplay to give the Wheat Kings a 1-0 lead. However it was short lived, as Martensville tied it about two and half minutes later.  West Central did regain the lead late, on a goal by Daxton Endicott to give the Wheat Kings a 2-1 lead after two.

Once again, Martensville tied the score half way through the third period, and took the lead late. Undeterred, the Wheat Kings got a powerplay late, and Aiden Torry scored with 29 seconds left to send the game into overtime.

The teams went scoreless in the first overtime period, but Martensville scored with 5:20 left in the second overtime period, to win the game 4-3, on a goal by Tyson Janzen.

Game two in Kindersley Saturday was a low scoring affair, with no goals scored until the third period. Cohen Klassen scored early in the period for Martensville, to give them a 1-0 lead. Then with the goaltender pulled late, it was deja vu, as Aiden Torry scored another late goal, this time with just 10 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.

Just like game one, there was no scoring in the first overtime period, so it needed double overtime once again. Unfortunately, it was a similar result for the Wheat Kings, as Clark Goebel scored for Martensville to end the U15 AA Wheat Kings season. The goal should not have been scored, as the entry appeared to be offside at the West Central line, but just a few seconds later, Martensville scored on a scramble, ending the hopes for a league title for West Central. Martensvile goaltender Corben Schurr stole the show for the AA Marauders, making 41 saves in the 2-1 victory.

Expect more from the U15 AA West Central Wheat Kings heading into the off season, as many players are eligible for the WHL draft later this year.

U18 AA

The U18 AA West Central Wheat Kings continued their playoff winning streak on the road in the league semi finals over the weekend. Thanks to a pair of goals by captain Leighton Partington, and 41 saves by goaltender Blake Sittler, the Wheat Kings won game one over the Saskatoon IceHawks.

Partington scored early in the first period to give the Wheat Kings a 1-0 lead, but Saskatoon tied it before the end of the first period, and that is the way it stayed after one. Partington got his second late in the second period, with the assist going to Hunter Sperle, and West Central held on for the 2-1 win, and 1-0 lead in the best of five semi final series.

Game two is back at the Unity Community Centre Saturday at 6:30 pm.
