I would like to share and also celebrate that the Hi-Way 14 Hockey League will be hosting a game on Friday December 22 at Elrose at 7:30 in our U18 division. The game will be between Eston and Outlook as the host team. The game will be played with a family that has three generation of officials doing the game.

First, we have Brian Watson who has come back from retirement a couple years ago to help us out with our shortage of officials. He officiated from 1975 to around 1988. He then went to coaching hockey and umpiring softball and baseball.  Next, we have Ed Watson, Brian’s son who is making his mark in the West Central region as a ref and linesman up into the senior ranks and is in his sixth year now.

Also helping with officiating in the game are Katie Watson, who started officiating in her early teens and has worked many games growing up in the Hi-Way 14 Hockey League for us as well as going away to school in Alberta. She is now working on her way through the Hockey Canada officiating for excellence program and helping out our west central area when she not in school or doing games in Alberta. She is in her 11th year. Our 4th official of the night is Colby Watson. Colby also grew up working Hi-Way 14 Hockey League games and playing hockey in the league. He has also gone off to school and still playing hockey, but also still wearing the stripes when he has time as well. Colby is also in his 11th year as an official.

Both Katie and Colby are Ed and Lisa's kids and when we add Brian in, it's with families like these that keep hockey alive in the rural areas. More than that it what makes hockey special it’s still about family.  I would like to congratulate and thank the Watson family for their contributions to hockey over their years and their officiating help.
