The Macklin Mohawks and Kindersley Sr. Klippers renewed hostilities at the West Central Events Centre this past Friday. The Klippers looked to stave off elimination and force a game 4 back in Macklin.

Kindersley once again fell behind to the Mohawks on a goal by Foster Steinhubel, with the assist going to Jared Hillis at the 14:10 mark of the first period. That’s the way it stayed after 1, but Kindersley battled back and got 2 goals of their own in the 2nd period, both with the extra man.

Captain Troy Boisjoli was the first on the board for the Klippers, with the assists going to Preston Kopeck and Shayne Neigum at the 14:20 mark. Kindersley then got a big goal from defenseman Eric Roy in the last minute of the period, with Brody Ryberg and Kopeck adding helpers, and the Klippers took the lead heading into the intermission.

The Mohawks tied it up on a power play of their own in the third period with just over 6 minutes to play on a rebound by Spencer Bast, with the assists going to Carson Pickett and Brad Buckingham.

The game stayed tied and the teams headed to overtime. Carson Pickett was the hero for the Mohawks as he went untouched down the right wing and scored short side on Luke Sproule, and Macklin won 3-2 to head to the SWHL finals for the 3rd straight season. Nathan Hargrave was the star of the series, making timely big saves, and outplaying Kindersley goaltender Luke Sproule by a wide margin in the 3 game sweep for the Mohawks.

The Sr. Klippers then took on the Lucky Lake Lakers on Saturday, a team that didn’t make the playoffs in the SVHL this season. The Lakers proved to be a much tougher test then Kindersley had anticipated, as extra time was needed in game 1 in Lucky Lake.

Brody Ryberg was the star of the game, putting up 4 points, including scoring the overtime winner, as the Klippers won 5-4. The Lakers and Klippers will play game 2 in Kindersley this Friday at 8 pm as Kindersley will try to wrap up the best of 3 series at home. If Lucky Lake can win Friday night, game 3 would be back in Lucky Lake on Saturday at 7:30.
