It was a start to forget for the Kindersley Sr. Klippers, as the Macklin Mohawks came into the WCEC and scored early and often. The barrage started with Carson Picket scoring on the powerplay to put the Mohawks up by one. Then just 28 seconds later, Jared Hillis doubled the lead to two. The Sr. Klippers then went to the powerplay, but still could not get anything going, and with 16:25 left in the opening period Hunter Steinhubel scored shorthanded to extend the lead to three. The powerplay did continue for Kindersley and Jessey Pocock scored on a nice setup by Kyle Donaldson to get within two with 15:32 left to play in a high scoring first five minutes. Macklin got their fourth goal halfway through the first by captain Cody McKinnon. The Sr. Klippers answered back a few minutes later as Darian Dziurzynski scored on a nice setup from brother David to get back within two of Macklin. But Macklin got a late powerplay and took advantage of it. McKinnon got his second of the period, to extend the lead back to three with just 32 seconds remaining in the first.
