Kelley Brinkworth, SGI Manager of Media Relations relates a few tips and tricks for snowmobile safety before heading out on the road

With the chilly temperatures on the rise and the snow falling to the ground, the desire to get out and hit the snowmobile trails tops many people's lists for seasonal past-times.

Before you hit the road, it is important to keep in mind the proper registration regulations and safety procedures surrounding your snowmobile.

To make sure your snowmobile is roadworthy, it must be fully registered under the owner.

The owner of the snowmobiles must be at least 16 years of age and licensed in order to ride the winter vehicle in any area.

You may ride a snowmobile on private land without a license if you have passed the neccesary snowmobiling safety course.

The place to ride a snowmobile differs by region.  It is imporant to have a knowledge of your local bylaws.  Riding on a public highway is prohibited with the exception of crossing.

A few safety measures to keep in mind when out riding:

Helmets are mandatory for both driver and passenger.

It is important to wear a snowsuit, and to travel in groups.

Do not operate a snowmobile if under the influence of drug or alcohol.

Never go over a speed of 80km or the posted speed limits.
