Smokey conditions returned to the region this past weekend and could be a lingering issue this spring and summer.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada meteorologist Stephen Berg, the poor air quality can be attributed to wildfires in northern Alberta, Saskatchewan, and west-central Manitoba.

"It's certainly possible that the smoke could be returning to your area in the near future," he said. "These fires still are out of control and it's just a matter of airflow and air circulation (to disperse the smoke throughout the prairies)."

Berg said Saturday's smoke was mostly from the Wood Buffalo National Park and Fort McMurray area.

"The smoke is just draped over certain areas right now," he said.
