The Town of Eston looked to knock it out of the park when it came to their attempt at a special Small Town Friday Night recently. Roping in the Saskatchewan celebrity that is Quick Dick was a good start, as he treated the town to a “Rural Life Comedy” show as part of his Small Town Comedy Tour.

We chatted with the man behind the act, Dickson Delorme out of Tuffnell, about his Quick Dick character and how his life at home influenced the comedy routine he is currently taking around the province.

“I don’t think a lot of people really know what to expect when I bring this show to town. I originally wrote this thing for a little fundraiser we had going on for Sheho, Saskatchewan, a town right close to where I grew up that we would play hockey and a bunch of different things right,” he shared, “I kind of wrote it for small town humour, and people that knew my folks and things like that. The show got cancelled last year because of COVID, so it’s material that I just never wound up putting up on my YouTube channel or anywhere else.”

According to him he just kept those ideas loaded in the chamber with the intention of eventually using them during a show in Sheho, but a few opportunities presented themselves that gave Delorme a chance to try it out somewhere other than home.

“It seemed to hit in a few small towns, and it didn’t matter if anywhere knew where Sheho was or Tuffnell was, or any of that because throughout the great country of Canada, all the way over to the US, Europe, Australia; there are small towns everywhere, and everyone kind of gets the humour if you grew up in a small town you know what I mean?”

Despite an already busy schedule these past few months attending different exhibitions, Quick Dick McDick was eager to add a few more obligations to his schedule. When we caught up with him he was headed to Eastend, ready to move to Val Marie the next day, before hitting up Eston and finishing up in Consul.

“Just doing some small town stuff. It’s neat to get out and see people. I guess sometimes you don’t really know if what you are watching on the internet is real or not, but I think people figure it out pretty fast I am the same person in real life as I am on YouTube.”

Delorme is excited to bring his content to the stage, but wants people to know it usually isn’t for the younger population. Most of his main topics usually revolve around more political and controversial national news arenas. Tonight in Eston however, children 13 and older can attend with a parent, and he is going to leave topics like politics and COVID alone, substituting it for the good old-fashioned small town humour he has grown proud of.

“We just talk about all of the things that are goofy to people out in rural Saskatchewan.”

The fun factor is something paramount to the show’s host.

“We have fun. Well I have fun anyways, I haven’t been pulled off the stage with a cane but I’m sure that’s coming at some point,” joked the internet personality.

An important date in Indian Head is at the top of his calendar, but Quick Dick’s tour will see him back in west central at Hoosier in the few weeks for a true small town gig. That will come following appearances at Agribition in Regina next week, and then he also has spots booked in Banff before beginning to taper off his activity in the content world.

The end of his tour is in large part due to the hole left behind back home at the farm this winter. Even an internet celebrity can’t forget what’s important when it comes to the critters back home.

“We share turns feeding stuff, and the guy that looks after the place is actually headed to see his family back in Mexico,” said Delorme, who is eager to use the time back home as a drawing board for his next set of videos, “It will be good to get back home, and get isolated in Tuffnell again where you can just start looking at all the goofy things I want to do for production so it will be good to get chipping away at that. Keep the rest of everybody outside of Saskatchewan having fun right?”

His over 72,000 subscribers on YouTube will certainly appreciate an uptick in videos from their favourite Saskatchewan farmer, but the small town tour won’t finish itself.

The performance in Eston was good one as Quick Dick's short trek across the province continued, and if he so chose, sticking around for the hockey game afterwards might have been a good decision as a pair of undefeated senior teams in Eston and Dinsmore did battle.

“I’ll see what the crowds doing, if nobody wants to boo me and beat me out of there then there’s a good chance I might stick around for the hockey game. Crash the night in Eston, and rip down to Consul the next day.”
