A scholarship based out of west-central Saskatchewan will be a part of local graduation ceremonies once again this year.

The team at Prairie Branches announced one last chance for Grade 12 students to apply for one of their four $500 scholarships back in May. They give out one scholarship for each of the communities they serve in Wilkie, Unity, Biggar, and Kerrobert as the deadline to apply was June 1.

While the winners couldn't be disclosed quite yet, we asked Prairie Branches Executive Director Eunice Washkowsky to share a little bit more on the awards.

"It's for students who are entering health related or social service related fields, with an intention to work with people with disability's in their future career."

Washkowsky shared what they look for.

"Part of that process is writing an essay explaining what their intentions and plans are, and another criteria that we use is their grades so they send us transcripts, and we also look at things like volunteer work and employment."

They have been handing out the scholarship for over a decade now. Sometimes the recipients are already working for Prairie Branches.

"We are very proud. Sometimes we have some of our high school students that actually work for us end up being awarded the scholarship which is absolutely wonderful."

The good news for recipients should be shared soon as graduation season commences around West Central.
