A few west-central Saskatchewan rural municipalities are part of the 31 municipalities and communities set to receive a large shot of funding courtesy of the province's Rural Integrated Roads for Growth (RIRG) program.

The RM of Monet (No.257) is getting $500,000 towards a new road project. The RM of Newcombe (No. 260) is also getting $500,000 through the latest round of funding, though that project was previously announced. Other nearby locations set to receive work include the RM of Vanscoy (No. 345) with another $500,000 heading to road construction, and RM of Craik (No. 222) who will be getting $253,650 for roadwork.

34 projects in total are on the agenda, as $13 million in total will be available through the RIRG. The release states that the province will commit $13 million for a total of $47 million in estimated road, bridge+ and culvert project costs.

"The RIRG program has been a successful partnership program with the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) for many years," Highways Minister Jeremy Cockrill said. "These investments in rural economies promote growth and prioritizes the safety and quality of roads and bridges in rural Saskatchewan."

The program provides financial support to rural municipalities in the process of constructing and upgrading rural infrastructure. This work can be wide ranging for positives as local industries including agriculture, energy and forestry each benefit.

"Rural municipalities maintain local infrastructure, which is supporting Saskatchewan's rural-based industries and the provincial economy," SARM President Ray Orb said, as the program grants cover up to 50 per cent of each project's total cost, to a maximum of $500,000. "The RIRG program provides financial support for rural roads which is important for our municipalities."

This is all part of the Government's plan to improve 1,000 kilometres of provincial highways this year, as part of their overall Growth Plan goal of building and upgrading 10,000 km of highways over ten years. More than $12 billion has come from the Government since 2009 to improve more than 19,400 km of Saskatchewan roads.
