The road team wasn't the only blizzard flying into the Town of Kyle last night.

The Kenaston Blizzards senior hockey team battled through some tough winter conditions to make it to the Kyle Community Sports Centre for the Sask Valley Hockey League Finals opening game.

It's a championship rematch this year between Kyle and Kenaston, after the Blizzards swept the Elks for the SVHL crown last season. Taking the series opening game 6-5, Kyle made sure last night that their season wouldn't be ending in a sweep again this time around.

Scoring four goals in the opening frame, it's safe to say the first period started off hot for the home team in Kyle. The Elks and Blizzards then traded second period goals to make it 5-1 headed into the third. The first game was going exactly to plan for the valley's first-place-finishers.

The teams traded goals again to start the final period of play, as things sat at 6-2 about halfway through the third. That's when the Blizzards stormed back making it 6-3 with seven minutes left, and then 6-4 with under five to go, before the Elks would eventually escape with a 6-5 decision in a game that certainly sets the tone for a great series.

The next game of the series goes Thursday night at 8:30, with the rest of the games to be determined.
