The Kindersley Fire Department recently posted a reminder for homeowners in the area to make sure that any outer exhaust vents are cleared and unobstructed.

In the event of a large snowfall, vents that are low to the ground may become blocked. The vents can also become blocked over time by their intended function. Keeping these vents cleared can prevent the build-up of Carbon Monoxide in the home.

Carbon Monoxide has no colour or odor, and can be lethal in high concentration. It is recommended that Carbon Monoxide detectors be replaced every five years, as their ability to detect the gas begins to falter around that time. As for the vents, they can be cleaned with a few simple household chemicals and appliances.

For cleaning an outer house vent, all that is required is WD-40 (or another kind of lubricant), a bucket, dishwashing liquid, a wire vent brush with a long handle, and a scrub brush or old clothes. Check the vent and its opening for rust, clear the vent of lint or any other buildup, then mix the dishwashing fluid with water, and scrub the inside.

A build up in these vents can also lead to a house fire, so it is recommended to clean these vents every three to five years.
