A nice fireplace in the home can make the holiday season all that much more cozy.

Tammy Saathoff of the Rosetown Fire Department has provided some tips to ensure everyone can have a safe and enjoyable fireplace experience.

When owning a gas fireplace, it is important to have all the lines checked and serviced by a professional before lighting up for the season.

Wood fireplaces require more cleaning maintenance than gas fireplaces.

Saathoff advises a routine check and cleaning of the chimney in order to avoid the ignition of accumulated tar and creosote which can build up, collect and become a fire hazard.

Always open the damper of the fireplace in order to provide the home with the proper ventilation it requires.

It is also advised that pets and children are to be under supervision when a fire is burning.

And of course, while a fire is burning, it is always wise to keep a watchful eye at all times to make certain no accidents occur.
