Saskatchewan author Pam Metz published her first children’s book about a year ago and she’s now working on her second book. However, with both books, she has some special co-authors.

Metz’s first book “Nibbles Goes To School” was written by her and her grandson Declan, who was eight years old at the time.

“We just sat down and Declan started with his story idea and then we just sat down and came up with a story and wrote it together,” Metz said.

“It took a couple of days and then I found an illustrator to illustrate our pictures for us. We kind of drew pictures to show the illustrator how we wanted it and then we got them published.”

The book is about a boy who loses his pet spider. Unbeknownst to him, the spider was in his friend’s backpack and ended up going to school. The book follows the adventures as the school staff and the boys try to safely capture the spider.

Following “Nibbles Goes To School”, Metz is now working on a short novel book with her granddaughter Ava called “Saving Kenny.”

“I've always wanted to write children's books with my grandchildren. That was kind of my thing that I was going to do after I retired and I retired three years ago. So now I'm starting to write the books with my grandchildren,” Metz said.

“Saving Kenny” is based loosely on real family experiences, according to Metz. It is about a girl that lives on a farm outside of Moose Jaw with a mischievous goat that her mom wants to give away. With the help of her best friend’s dad, who hosts an “anything you want to talk about Friday” talk show on the radio, they set up a campaign so her mom won’t give away the goat.

While “Nibbles Goes To School” is a children’s book, “Saving Kenny” is a short chapter book with about eight chapters geared more toward older kids around the ages of 10 to 12.

Her first book was self-published as she was still learning the process of publishing a book. For “Saving Kenny,” Metz isn’t ruling out the idea of seeking out a publisher.

“Nibbles Goes To School” is available here on Amazon. “Saving Kenny” is expected to be released in March.
