After getting a healthy dump of snow this week following an Environment Canada snowfall warning, another weather warning is calling for extreme cold to set in.

Tuesday and Wednesday were no strangers to frigid temperatures earlier this week, but it seems like the worst is still yet to come with "a multi-day episode of very cold wind chills" expected. According to the weather service the coldest chills could end up somewhere between -40 and -50, and could last into early Monday morning.

Originally detailed as extremely cold air at 4:39 AM Thursday morning, the next update at 6:58 AM shared the following remarks.

"An arctic air mass is forecasted to move into the region on Thursday and persist through the weekend. Although temperatures are expected to slightly moderate during the day, they will once again drop to near or below -30°C in parts of the region on Thursday night and the following nights. When combined with winds of 15 to 25 km/h, this will result in wind chill values ranging from -40°C to -50°C at times over the coming days."

Because extreme cold can put anyone at risk, these warnings are put out whenever very cold temperatures or wind chill values can create an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia.

"Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill."
