The Eston Winter Kickoff held over the weekend was a massive success.

Eston Recreation Director Garrett Turner was happy being able to showcase the Eston Communiplex this early in the season.

"We got to utilize every part of our facility. It was awesome to see the rink packed this time of year."

Turner then explained where the idea for the 'Winter Kickoff" came from.

"Over the last couple of years, we've done a "Summer Kickoff" event that's been a huge event for in Eston. So, we decided with the facility we have available and all the venues in that facility, we decided to have a "Winter Kickoff" this year."

The 3-on-3 tournament highlighted the weekend, but other venues in the facility opened their doors as well.

"The 4H club opened up the bowling alley for us, and we also had a kids movie night," Turner added.

Turner knows this could not have been possible without the hard work from special people in the community.

"We had a ton of volunteers. The Rec Committee was awesome, our rink staff worked around the clock to get things ready for this. Sandy Sutherland and the Curling Club in town did a really good job getting the ice ready. This is the earliest it has been I think in ever. Then we got a local group that plays pickleball so, they organized a tournament on Sunday afternoon. So, it was a lot of fun."

Turner also mentioned there is a special banquet coming up this weekend as well.

"We got the Gallery of Glory banquet coming up Saturday, November 4. Our three inductees this year are Cliff & Margaret Olorenshaw, the Communities in Bloom and Blythe Stevenson are all going into the Gallery of Glory this year."
