A wind chill in the -50s across west-central Saskatchewan has lead to multiple school divisions cancelling their bus routes for Friday morning.

While the Sun West School Division does not share cancellations publicly, both the Living Sky School Division and Chinook School Division (Leader) provided information on Thursday ahead of the dangerously cold morning. The criteria for each school division cancelling bus routes can be found in the article below from earlier in the week.

Typically the Living Sky School Division has a running list detailing the status of each bus route, but the message Friday morning was that, "all bus routes are cancelled for January 12 due to extreme cold temperatures", that being confirmed Thursday night.

The Chinook School Division shared Thursday night that there was a chance several school buses throughout the division would not run on Friday morning. Families will be notified directly of any changes through a phone notification, and it's stated that Chinook schools doors will remain open where possible.

"The safety of our students and staff is always our priority - please stay warm and safe!"

Finally, Sun West School Division policy states that the bus driver has full responsibility when it comes to notifying students. With temperatures approaching -40 without the wind chill, there is a strong chance routes will be cancelled.

The extreme cold is expected to last through until Monday.
