Thanksgiving weekend will be the final opportunity this year to tour CFS Alsask, the retired military site outside of the community of Alsask.

Sunday, October 8 is the last day for the informative tours that take you around the site, and inside the structure commonly known as the Alsask radar dome.

Fred Armbruster leads the Canadian Civil Defence Museum And Archives, and it's been another good year coming from Alberta to share Canadian history.

"We've had some generous donations, so we have been able to do more renovations and restoration to the tower itself." said the Executive Director Armbruster. "Basically by next season we will have all new windows in the tower and that kind of stuff."

New this year, after the tour there is a chance to ride in one of the various Canadian military trucks in their arsenal.

"It's progressing forward. The venue itself is becoming bigger and better for all our guests. Now that we also offer rides in the trucks after each tour, it's an awesome additional feature that everyone seems to enjoy."

Armbruster seemingly has a binder of ideas for CFS Alsask. Any changes they make will be to improve the visitor experience, while still retaining all the history the location has to offer.

If you are not sold on a visit yet, the weather is supposed to be fantastic.

"It's going to be almost like a summer day for us. Looks like low winds, so a very enjoyable time." said Armbruster, who will balancing work and play for Thanksgiving. "We are going to be sort of doing our fall work, getting things ready for winter."

Because it's the last visit for a while, between tours the CCDMA team will be doing any work they can to winterize the site.

Anyone interested in heading out Sunday can pre-register through their Facebook page, or by emailing info@civildefence.ca. They ask you arrive at least 15 minutes early and wear closed toe shoes.

Admission to the tour and chance to ride in the trucks is by donation, as the main goal for the group behind it remains sharing and preserving history at the same time.
