As many communities in the region are coming together to kick off the Christmas season, Unity’s celebrations included a snowman making contest for charity during their Winter Wonderland celebrations last week.

The Unity Fire Department, Unity RCMP and the Town of Unity each chose a charity to compete for and brought their best snowman forward for the Winter Wonderland competition. Despite valiant efforts from all teams, the former Mayor and judge of the competition deemed the Town of Unity’s snoopy submission to be the winner. The creative snowman efforts from the Town earned their charity, Kidsport Unity, a donation of $100 to put towards their programs.

An additional snowman competition was also held with submissions from St. Peter’s School and Larry Kraft with the gingerbread house from St. Peter’s school taking the win and being awarded pizza as their prize.

Unity’s Winter Wonderland also collected donations throughout the celebration for the Secret Santa program, food bank and the Unity Community Resource Centre. Sherri Solomko is one of four committee members and said Unity’s Winter Wonderland was held for the first time in 2009 and has grown from 22 events last year to 31 events this year.

Solomko stated that Unity is known for their hosting and many people come out to the festivities every year to get into the Christmas spirit, enjoy the sense of community and to support local businesses and charities.

Unity’s Winter Wonderland is held on the first Thursday of December and Solomko said they are hoping for even more participation next year throughout the town for residents enjoy.
