After three years of planning and hard work, the Kindersley Flatlanders Speedway returned to the west central community this past weekend.

Although the unfavorable weather conditions forced the Speedway to cancel Sunday’s race schedule, Saturday was still considered a big success for Flatlanders. The speedway was welcomed back by race fans with 136 spectators in the stands which Dan Hankewich, treasurer for Flatlanders Speedway, said was “exceptional considering the weather”.

The regular race season typically runs from the end of May or beginning of June until late into September and Hankewich said the two days of races they had planned this year is just the start of what is in the books for next spring.

Hankewich talked about the what it took to get the track back up and running for all to enjoy.

“It’s been long and tedious. We got flooded out and had to figure out a different spot and because we are all volunteer, it took a while for us to get everything together but we are happy to be back. It’s a great time and we just want to be able to provide that for people in the community.”

He stated resurrecting the speedway wasn’t necessarily about making money, but more-so in bringing people together and giving the community another outlet and resource not only for fun, but to get involved in a sport that they may not have thought about otherwise.

Spectators on Saturday had the opportunity to see a number of races from three divisions including thunder car, thunder truck and street stock. These same divisions will make a repeat performance when Flatlanders gears up for races on Saturday to make up for the loss of races of this past Sunday.
