The Friends of the Kinsmen Arena are working hard to get Rosetown’s outdoor rink ready for the season.

President of the newly formed committee, Rick McKeil said that the Friends of the Kinsmen Arena hope to have the back ice surface usable by Christmas; of course, weather permitting.

The group is made up of volunteers with McKeil serving as president, Rick Ironside as vice-president, and Mike Clayton taking on the role of secretary.

With the construction of the new outdoor rink and not enough man power to maintain it, the committee was formed.

While some of the volunteers come from rural areas or don’t have children or grandchildren of their own, the group recognized the need to keep the much loved spot taken care of for the good of the community.

“It’s one of those things, you sit around and you talk about it, you see where people are getting frustrated, and so a couple of us got talking about it and decided why don’t we just try and do it ourselves-volunteer and get it looked after because it benefits the kids and ultimately the town,” shared McKeil.

The committee decided to split the workload to four groups. Each group head will find volunteers who will be responsible for clearing, flooding and maintaining the ice for a few designated weeks over the winter.

The rink will be painted white and will have all of the standard regulation lines painted, hopefully in time for a Christmas skate!
