Back near the beginning of May, the Sun West School Division received some great news from the Terry Fox Foundation relating to strong performances from their schools when it came to fundraising for the 2020 Terry Fox Run.

According to the release, twenty Sun West schools participated in the Terry Fox Run and raised $17,670.65 for cancer research, while special recognition was provided to five schools. Beechy, Dinsmore, Davidson, Kenaston and Elizabeth Middle School in Kindersley all finished in the top 50 in Saskatchewan.

Beechy and Dinsmore were the only schools from the region within the top 10, and Beechy was the real star of the event for Sun West finishing in the top 5.

#5 Beechy School $3,510.00
#8 Dinsmore Composite School $3,151.35
#25 Davidson School $2,021.00
#40 Kenaston School $1,527.00
#44 Elizabeth Middle School $1,473.00

Saskatchewan Coordinator for Schools and Community with the Terry Fox Foundation Wynter Philip wrote: “Terry never faltered in his determination and perseverance and we are honoured to see the Sun West School Division students, staff and community bring the same strength and spirit to this fight 40 years later.”

Principal of Beechy School Leia Hey spoke with West Central Online to discuss the schools achievement.

“It’s always been a big thing in Beechy, an event we put a lot into,” she said, “It was exciting to see a total that big, and we have never received recognition for the fundraising we have done.”

Hey was quick to mention the school division’s recognition for their effort is nice, but what they really try to focus on is making students the ones who are recognized. Staff members dying their hair and offering themselves up for a dunk tank are different things that motivate kids to get out and gather pledges, along with other in-school perks being made available.
