On Sunday November 11. The world came together to remember all who have helped to protect our freedom.

Services were held all over, including many local communities. Rosetown and Kindersley had larger services while other communities such as Elrose broke the service up into parts. Elrose and Outlook both had a service in the morning, then ended the day with a bell ceremony.

2018 marked a significant remembrance day as it marks 100 years since the end of the Great War. World War One (WWI) was a war fought between 1914-1918.

WWI started in 1914 after Archduke Franz Ferdinand, who was the heir to the Austro-Hungarian empire, was assassinated.

The assassination was all that was needed to push the already tense Europe to breaking point. Gavrilo Princip, who was a Serbian Nationalist, was responsible. He killed Ferdinand in an attempt to stop the Austro-Hungarain Empire from continuing to have control over Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Austria-Hungary, as well as other countries, started to blame the Serbian government for the attack. Soon both sides started building up armies with help of their allies.

War was officially declared on July 28, 1914. With in a week of declaration Russia, Belgium, France, Great Britain and Serbia had joined forces to take on Germany and Austria-Hungary.

Canada and Australia, as well as other common-wealth countries automatically joined the war when Great Britain did due to the laws in place between the common-wealth countries.

As the WWI went on more countries became involved. Thirty-two main countries lead the war. Many secondary countries that were ruled by one of the empires also went into battle. This meant most of the world was at war.

In the Fall of 1918 the allies had pushed the enemy to surrender. On November 11, 1918 at 11 AM an armistice was declared.

The `War To End All Wars` was over, however it would not live up to its nick name as WWII would happen two decades later.

Even though Remembrance Day represents the day the guns went silent it has a much larger meaning. Remembrance Day is to give thanks to the veterans who fought for our freedom, the veterans who continue to fight for our freedom, the police who protect us, the paramedics who rush to our aid, and the firefighters who continue to save us.
