The 2019 CPU Western Powerlifting and Bench Press Championships were held in Saskatoon on September 6-8. Rosetown powerlifter, Adam Deibert, competed at the event at the junior level in the 93kg weight class.

This was the 18 year old's second time competing at the junior level, which includes lifters between the ages of 18-23. Deibert was the youngest athlete to compete at this age class both times and has only been lifting for a little under three years.

The recent Rosetown Central High School graduate, who had previously seen much success at the sub-junior level; breaking and setting new records, didn’t have the showing he would’ve liked at the Western Competition.

Deibert said he made the decision to do a water cut before competing. Having just two hours from weigh-in to competition time resulted in him being unable to re-hydrate fully.

“I was a little heavy for my weight class, so I had to cut some weight and it didn’t go so well, explained Deibert, “I was pretty white and almost fainted.”

The athlete finished the day only making 4/9 lift attempts earning himself a 5th place finish. His total was 27.5 kg below his personal best.

Deibert will be spending the next seven weeks training for the Saskatchewan Powerlifting Association Provincial Championships that will take place on October 25th-27th in Weyburn.

You will find Deibert in the gym seven days a week until competition time; four days of lifting and three days of conditioning. The dedicated strongman, whose biggest life to date was 601lbs, will enter into a higher weight class and hopes to redeem himself in October.
