A total of 32 teams gathered in Regina, SK this past weekend to take part in a 4-day hockey tournament that some may consider to be the most competitive tournament in Western Canada at the Pee Wee level.

The West Central Wheat Kings were invited to compete in this year's tournament and competed against other teams from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, the Northwest Territories, and even some teams south of the border.

The Wheat Kings were placed in a very competitive pool with the Regina Mustangs, Calgary Bow River Bruins and the Seattle Admirals. The team finished in a tie for second place in the pool, but due to tie-breaker rules, the Wheat Kings would end up finishing third place.

After three games of round robin, all 32 teams advance to the playoff round to compete against teams that finished in the same position in other pools. For example, all teams who finished in first place would advance to their own bracket, while all teams that finished last would compel in a different bracket.

Even though the Wheat Kings finished third, they would still face tough competition. West Central would end up facing the Weyburn Wings in the Quarter-Finals and would fall 4-2 to be eliminated from the games.

Brett Sautner, Head Coach of the Wheat Kings, talks about facing the best competition in Western Canada, and how evenly played the games were.

"All the games were close and very well matched. It's really neat to play a team from Seattle in this tournament, and to come away with a win. The roster was knocked down to 12 players after some injuries sustained, but the boys didn't quit and played hard all the way through." Sautner said.
