The latest COVID-19 cancellation in the sporting world that is affecting local athletes became official on Monday.

The Canada West cancelled all team competitions for the first term of the 2020-21 university athletic season.

Football, soccer, women's rugby 15s, and women's field hockey are among the sports that will go without a regular season, playoffs, or championship.

Championships for individual competitions such as golf, cross country, and swimming will have their fate decided on July 15.

Though second-term sports haven't had their status affected, those sports overlapping both halves of the 2020-21 season will see a postponement for the time being.

Hockey, basketball, and volleyball in the Canada West conference will not be able to start any earlier than January 1.

The CW notes an official decision on the status of their entire season will be made October 8. The same date will decide the fate of all second-term sports including wrestling, track and field, curling, and women's rugby 7s).
