Local school divisions making efforts towards Truth and Reconciliation
All sorts of groups have been busy this week with another National Day of Truth and Reconciliation coming up on September 30. Both the Sun West School Division and Living Sky School Division operate schools around west-central Saskatchewan. Staff and students have spent some time over the past few weeks preparing to spread awareness. Orange shirts are a start, but the following people have gone out of their way to create something special in the name of 'Every Child Matters'. Truth and Reconciliation Speaker coming to Eston A pair of Grade 9 students in Marengo helped create the video below showcasing a look into Truth and Reconciliation from their perspective in a video posted to the Sun West School Division Youtube. Along with group pictures from both the Division Office staff, and Board of Education and Senior Management supports, the Sun West School Division posted this to their Facebook page on Thursday morning. Unity Composite High School's senior girls volleyball team hosted 12-teams on the weekend of September 22 and 23 for their third annual 'Tourney for Truth and Reconciliation'. Kindersley, Kerrobert, Outlook, Maple Creek, Wilkie, Macklin, Plenty and Rosetown had teams in attendance along with the home Warriors. Both the Bert Fox Bisons and Minisitkwan Lake Warriors were also part of the field taking a long trip to Unity. UCHS is part of the Living Sky School Division, and coach/teacher Vicki Orobko was happy to help put the event on. Tourney for Truth and Reconciliation was unreal. Bronze for my team. From the coaches' perspective the tournament was a great opportunity to play with heart, and provide the 'service and awareness critical to building citizens striving for excellence' as shared in UCHS's mission statement. "It's the 3rd year for the tourney. Last year we included the school and a flag raising. This year we wanted to build on reconciliation while still learning truth. The teams from near and far were thrilled to share something special from their treaty area!" shared Orobko through email about the special tournament.
