For the 70th year in a row the War Amps will be sending out key tags that can help recover lost keys.

The key tags which are specially coded can be registered to someone's name and address.  If found they can be placed in a mailbox and returned or a toll free number can be called, the keys are then returned free of charge.  For most of West Central Saskatchewan key tags were mailed out this week and should arrive soon.

West Central Online spoke to Jamie Lunn, Public Awareness Officer for War Amps about what the key service means for War Amps

"People do often choose to donate because they find value in that service.  We've returned over a million and a half sets of lost keys to their owners, since the program started 70 years ago.  It's more vital than ever, due to the high replacement cost of electronic keys and remote devices.  Sometimes those can be hundreds of dollars to replace, people definitely see value in that and choose to donate to the War Amps."

The War Amps was started by war veteran amputees back in 1918 as a way to provide direction, counseling, self-help and practical assistance.  The key tag service was started in 1946 providing a sheltered workplace for Canadian amputees and Canadians with disabilities.

According to Jamie Lunn this year marks a special occasion.

"It's really that celebration, of those servicemen and that remembrance of those serviceman who started the key tag service 70 years ago, which continues to employ Canadians with disabilities, and Canadians with amputations today."

The War Amps also runs the very important CHAMPS program helping child amputees with financial aid and support.
