After a breakdown in negotiations with the provincial government and UNIFOR, the union informed members that October 4th would be when they would commence a strike. UNIFOR represents just over 4,000 employees across a number of provincial crown corporations.

The strikes could lead to a number of service disruptions. The crown corporations do have plans in place that they believe should prevent any major disruption, there are also a number of essential service agreements in place that will ensure vital services are not effected.

In a statement received by the West Central Online news team, a spokes person directed customers to the many online options for Sasktel. As no Sasktel store will not be open during the strike customers can make changes to their accounts via mySASKTEL. It also reminded residents that bills can be paid online or at any local bank and credit union.

For individuals worried about power it is noted that regular line technicians with SaskPower are not represented by UNIFOR. So if power goes out, it will be restored. Most of the SaskPower UNIFOR employees are based in the crown's administration.

Due to the dangerous nature of natural gas technicians are an essential service. Emergencies will be responded to. Emergencies can include line strikes and carbon monoxide calls. Disruption to the crown's services will occur with new constructions and meter installations.

For residents of the West Central region the disruption should be minimal. Unless you're dealing with new construction. Third party providers should still be able to assist with Sasktel services. Issue may arise with calls to various crown customer service lines, as many of them are staffed with UNIFOR members.
