Loreburn Grade 12 student Alexius Long is among only 90 students out of 5,714 applicants from across Canada to be selected as a finalist for a Loran Scholarship.

Loran Scholarships are provided by the Loran Scholars Foundation. Founded in 1998, the Foundation grants undergraduate awards based on a mix of academic achievement, extracurricular activity and leadership potential. The Foundation works in partnership with universities, donors and volunteers across Canada and offers the country’s largest and most comprehensive four-year undergraduate award (valued at $100,000) to young Canadians based on character, service and the promise of leadership.

This fall Alexius was among 5,174 students from over 1400 schools who applied for the 2022 Loran Award. She was one of the 335 top applicants who were invited to participate in semi-final interviews where she was asked questions to gauge her ability to demonstrate perseverance when faced with adversity, kindness, a sense of curiosity and the sparks of leadership potential.

Alexius has been chosen as one of 90 finalists who will participate in virtual National Selections in February and March.

Sun West Director of Education Randy Emmerson stated: “For Alexius to even have made it this far is an incredible accomplishment, we wish her the best as she competes in this last level but regardless of the outcome, she has proven herself an outstanding leader in her school and community.”
