Students from some smaller communities in Saskatchewan will be finding a new way to their schools this school year.

The provincial government announced cuts were on the way for in-town bus routes before the end of the 2016-2017 year which will have an effect on some schools in west central Saskatchewan. The decision had been made by the Ministry of Education when the budget for the 2017-2018 fiscal year had been released.

Communities with a population under 5,000 will not receive funding for in-town bussing from the government and will have to be funded by the school division at their own discretion.

One school division in the region has already announced that the cuts will make in-town pick-ups unavailable for its students.

Living Sky School Division will be one of the areas feeling the effects of the cuts from the government as schools in Kerrobert, Unity, and Wilkie will be affected. Although, rural pick-ups are not affected by the reduction as long as students live outside of a one-kilometre radius from their respective schools.

Kerrobert Composite School (KCS) has already begun asking parents and guardians to complete Rural Transportation Request forms if their children will be utilizing the bus services this upcoming school year. According to the school's website, the forms will aid for the new bus routes as they will be updating to a new system.

Students attending KCS this year can find the forms here. The school will be handing out the forms to students during the first week of classes as well.
