The Special Olympics Saskatchewan provides sport programming for people with intellectual disabilities from all over Saskatchewan including 13 athletes in Unity. Special Olympics Unity athletes can participate in a numbers of sports including power lifting, snowshoeing and bowling.

The bowling program has been thriving since its inception in 2001, athletes practice in Kindersley every two weeks. They have attended tournaments in Meadow Lake, Saskatoon, and Kindersley for many years.

The group will compete in bowling tournaments in Meadow Lake this month, Saskatoon in April 2020 and Kindersley in June 2020. Unity sent three bowlers and a coach to represent Rivers West in 2019 Special Olympics Saskatchewan Winter Games held in Regina in February.

The power lifting program has a 12 week session before Christmas and 12 week session after Christmas to get ready for competition in April hosted by Special Olympics Saskatoon. The snowshoeing program runs when weather permits and will be attending a competitions in February 2020 also put on by Special Olympics Saskatoon.

Special Olympics Unity is part of the Rivers West Sports district, which includes Kindersley, the Battlefords, Eston and Meadow Lake, totalling 129 athletes and volunteers. Unity’s athletes and Rivers West is excited to be sending three athletes and a coach from the district to the 2020 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in Thunder Bay, Ontario. There will be two bowlers, one from Meadow Lake and one from Kindersley, and a snowshoeing athlete from Eston, along with a snowshoeing coach from Kindersley.
