More people are out and about enjoying the warmer temperatures over the last couple weeks. Sidewalks and roads are busier with children taking their bicycles out for the first ride of the year and residents going for walks and jogs.

As the traffic increases with the nice weather, Saskatchewan Government Insurance will be reminding drivers to take caution on the roads this spring.

SGI and law enforcement will be teaming up this month to emphasize safety for vulnerable road users such as cyclists, motorcylists, and pedestrians during their April spotlight. The feature will focus on assuring vulnerable road users are following proper road rules as well.

Law enforcement will be keeping an eye out for a number of hazardous situations and safety precautions including:

  • pedestrians crossing the street before it is safe and jaywalking;
  • cyclists disobeying traffic signs and lights;
  • motorcyclists not wearing proper equipment and/or following the rules of the road;
  • police watching for drivers not sharing the road safely with vulnerable road users.

Police and SGI offer the following suggestions and tips to residents:

  • Make eye contact with drivers to ensure they see you before you enter their path, whether walking or riding a bicycle or motorcycle.
  • Pedestrians should always cross at crosswalks while obeying walk lights;
  • Wear bright or reflective clothing;
  • Cyclists are recommended to utilize arm signals before turning or changing lanes.
  • Wearing a helmet whether a resident is using a motorcycle or bicycle.
  • Motorcyclists should wear appropriate gear and take a motorcycle safety course.
  • Drivers should keep a safe distance and be courteous and cautious around vulnerable road users.
