The countdown to the 2017-2018 school year is on as students return to the classrooms in less than two weeks.

September 5th marks the day in which classes will be back in session across west central Saskatchewan after a couple months of vacation. Overall, it is expected to be a very busy start to the school year with increased traffic around school zones.

In order to focus on the importance of safety during the first week of classes, the provincial government has proclaimed the day as Provincial Students' Day. The Sun West School Division is one of the education divisions which will be promoting the special day for motorists and students.

The school division will be emphasizing basic safety tips this day such as:

  • following the school zone limit of 30 km/h which is in effect unless otherwise posted;
  • being aware of children around buses when they are stopped or slowing down; and
  • understanding different signals on school buses (flashing roof lights, "empty" signs).
