SaskPower is holding a public engagement event at the community centre in Lucky Lake on Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m. about the future of nuclear power in the area. The meeting was originally scheduled to be held in Birsay but had to be changed due an issue with the venue.

The plan is to choose a site as early as 2024 and then build a Small Modular Reactor (SMR) as early as 2029.

“Ultimately our final decision whether or not we are going to proceed with nuclear power, that's not happening until 2029,” explained SaskPower media relations consultant Scott McGregor.

“But in order to make that decision, there's a significant amount of planning and regulatory and engagement work that we have to undertake now.”

The sites being considered for the SMR are Estevan and Elbow. This event will give SaskPower an opportunity to present information about the project and residents a chance to ask questions, raise concerns and be involved before a final decision is made.

This is part of a series of public information events being hosted by SaskPower in the Estevan and Elbow areas.

“Nuclear power is a new thing for Saskatchewan and so we want to make sure that the public is well informed that any questions they may have are answered and any sort of feedback that anyone wants to give us on the SMR file is heard and used to guide our decision-making process,” McGregor said.

SaskPower intends to narrow down options for potential sites within the next year based on information collected from studies and engagement events.
