The holiday season is officially in full swing, and homeowners are getting ready to decorate. Keeping our homes lit up with bright lights and colorful decorations can help the dark winter pass by, but in some cases they can also become dangerous if the right precautions are not made. Most hazards for indoor decoration can be prevented by simply taking an extra step to prevent residential fires.

National Home Fire Saftey Week runs from November 24th to 30th, and all home owners are reminded that fire safety in the home is always important but to be extra cautious with decoration hazards.

The fire place is always a place of comfort for all of the family in the winter time, but if not tended to properly it can cause major damage. Just like any other home appliance, the fireplace should be maintained, and kept safe for year round use. All debris from around the fireplace should be removed, for example decorations and wrapping paper should be as far from the fire as possible.

Candles and any other open flame should be kept in a higher space, away from any hanging decorations. Using a battery operated candle light to reduce the risk of having an open flame.

What is the holiday season without holiday cooking and baking? Ovens and stoves are often used constantly so it is important to use a timer when cooking so food does not burn or start a fire. In the event of a fire, do not turn on the overhead fan. Evacuate the home, then call your local fire department or 9-1-1.

If your Christmas tree is real, note that dry trees are a fire hazard. If the tree is fresh no needles will fall on the ground when you shake the tree. If you have and artificial tree, ensure that it is fire resistant and is marked up to standards by the Canadian Standards Association label.

Metallic tree decorations can also be a shock hazard if they are in contact with any deflective light. Also if you plan to leave your home for a certain period of time, unplug your outdoor lights to prevent electrical issues.

By following these simple tips, your home will remain safe and happy for the holiday season.
