It is a busy time for reisdents during the spring months. Spring cleaning is in motion for homes and yards, students are in the tail end of the school year or finishing exams, and people are already planning their vacation days for this year.

Camping is a popular activity thousands of residents from the province enjoy during the warm months. In Saskatchewan, reservations for specific provincial parks have become active on different days since April 4th. On Monday, reservations went online for Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Park, located 24 kilometres south of Kyle on Highway 4.

The park is located in the western section of the province where Lake Diefenbaker cuts through rugged river valley. There are over 300 campsites in the area, which means it is a popular spot for residents to visit, and a busy time of year for park staff.

"Close to 1,500 people have reserved sites," said Park Manager for Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Park Dave Silversides, describing how much traffic there was on the first day of reservations. "Other than the long weekends, chances of getting a campsite are pretty good."

Silversides explained how both locals and people from visiting regions spend time at the park for a number of reasons including fishing, boating, hiking, and even the history.

The park is highlighted by a 100-year-old home turned into the park's visitor centre. The Goodwin House sits on a unique landscape which had been used for generations by First Nations and Métis people. Afterwards, the area was used as a steamboat landing and ferry crossing which serviced locals on the Battleford Trail.

Traffic throughout the park is the busiest during July and August. But, staff encourage visitors to explore and camp during the off-peak times. "May and June are a little slower, but September and October can be fantastic camping weather too," said Silversides. "We have sites available until the end of October."

Visitors who do plan on adventuring to the park around Canada Day will be in for a treat this year. Staff are configuring plans to celebrate the country's 150th anniversary this year with residents in the park. "We're working with our park program coordinators and looking at what we might be doing in that regard," said Silversides. "I would imagine there is going to be lots of fireworks and different things going on July the 1st this year."
