Agriculture plays a very important role in Saskatchewan’s education curriculum, and that is being recognized this month as March is once again Agriculture Literacy Month in Saskatchewan.

Krystal Aulie, Manager of Agriculture Literacy with the Ministry of Agriculture, says giving our students the chance to learn about the ag industry is critical for Saskatchewan.

"We all know that agriculture is a key part of our province, our culture, our economy," she said. "It's important that the youth of our province are learning about agriculture at a young age so they can grow up and be apart of that industry."

What one of the tools teachers can use is Agriculture in the Classroom. That program uses books, videos and on-farm and school visits to help kids learn more about where their food comes from.

Aulie says the Agriculture in the Classroom Program provides the tools educators need to teach the importance of the ag industry in our province.

"What they do is they connect kids to agriculture across the province," she said. "The Ministry of Agriculture is proud to provide core funding to Ag in the Classroom. They are the ones who organized this great campaign of Canadian Agriculture Literacy Month. They actually arranged for farmers and ranchers to visit classrooms across the province so we will see a ton of Saskatchewan students get the change to actually meet and visit with and learn Saskatchewan's own farmers and ranchers."

This month through Agriculture in the Classroom, 150 volunteers will visit more than 7500 students across Saskatchewan to share their personal stories about agriculture.
