Tons of unfortunate news surrounding indigenous people has been made so far this year with the chilling discoveries being made at former residential school sites across Canada. These unfortunate stories, however, make whatever positives relating to First Nations people in 2021 a great thing to look at considering the times.

Near the end of the Sun West School Division calendar, they gave a special shout-out to Dinsmore Composite School for their work on a project that was released on National Indigenous Peoples Day (June 21st). According to the source, DCS received a $1000 grant from the Saskatchewan Arts Board (SAB) that was used towards a pair of projects.

The students connected with two indigenous teachers and artists, taking part in the Ribbon Skirt project, and the Métis Dot Art project. Ultimately the student’s effort was captured together in a video that evidenced their learning.

After some insight and look at designing their projects, the last part of the video allowed the students to explain the reasoning behind their creation. Sun West Director of Education Randy Emmerson would also help out on the day looking at Ribbon Shirts, and another DCS staff member was able to share her Ribbon Skirt with the children as well.

DCS was honoured to have the two indigenous teachers as virtual guests, and their ability to share their stories and experiences with the students. Thanks also went out again to Emmerson, and his ability to share on the special subject.
