The top talent in U12 softball will come together for the 2019 Softball Saskatchewan, U12 Girls District Showcase Championship. The showcase will take place in Saskatoon over the weekend of August 16-18. Rosetown’s Hailey Burton and Kendra Giles from Elrose are a few of the players from the west central area that will be representing Zone 7.

The pitcher/catcher duo tried out for the opportunity to be a part of the exciting weekend of ball at the end of July. Seventeen girls tried out, and Hailey and Kendra were two of the twelve girls the make the team.

“We had to catch pop flies and run the bases and everything was timed, they also clocked our speed when we pitched,” Hailey said, adding, “It felt really good to be chosen.”

The little athlete, who said ‘speed and accuracy make a good pitcher,’ has been practicing daily to be at her best for the Championship.

“I practice every Thursday in North Battleford and every other day at home with my dad; and sometimes with Kendra,” shared the soon to be grade six student.

The Zone 7 team has had two exhibition games against other zone teams. The girls won one and lost one each by one run.

“It should be a great weekend of nice, tight ball games,” commented mom, Nancy Burton.

Hailey, who will be coached by Wayne and Jenn Vaney for the championship, would also like to thank her Rosetown coaches, Bob Clothier and Kelli Emmons, who she said have been coaching her since her first year as a mite ball player.
