The Kerrobert Fairgrounds got a little greener this week with the help of community members volunteering to plant new trees in celebration of National Tree Day.

In total, 80 new trees were planted around the fairgrounds to either replace older ones, plan for the future with a wind break and make the area more visibly appealing. Volunteers from a number of Kerrobert businesses, the Grade 5/6 class from Kerrobert Composite School, Country 104.9 Morning Show Host Aaron Harle, and members of the Kerrobert Culture and Recreation helped put  Apple, Romeo Cherry, Poplar and Blue Colorado Spruce trees in the pre dug holes.

Rec. Director with the Town of Kerrobert, Marli Shepherd says this is the first step in greening up the Town of Kerrobert.

"We registered an event with Tree Canada in hopes that they will help us if we are successful. We have to submit pictures and stuff from our event afterwards, so we're kind of excited to start this as a new annual thing in Kerrobert. We're working on a substantial tree plant for the community and we thought we would start with the fairground."

The event took just under an hour to complete which is miniscule compared to how long the tree take to grow in size. Mature or fruit bearing tree typically take 4 years and onward while most trees reach maturity at different rates, anywhere between 10 to 40 years.
