The latest numbers from Statistics Canada, released Friday morning, show the unemployment rate in Saskatchewan took a sharp drop in September, falling from 7.0 percent to 6.3 percent. This was the largest drop recorded by any province in September, and gave Saskatchewan the fourth lowest unemployment rate in the country, behind B.C., Manitoba and Quebec.

The economy in the province generated 5,300 jobs, 400 of which were full-time positions. This comes as the country as a whole created 157,000 jobs, bringing the unemployment rate down to 6.9 percent, which is in line with where things were before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Yorkton-Melville economic region continued to have the lowest unemployment rate in the province at 4.2 percent. Prince Albert and Northern Saskatchewan was right behind at 5.1 percent. The unemployment rate in the Regina-Moose Mountain region was 6.5 percent, 7.7 percent in the Saskatoon-Biggar economic region and 8.1 percent in the Swift Current-Moose Jaw economic region.
