Officials at Grasslands National Park in Saskatchewan are recommending people not walk through the prairie dog colonies and use insect repellent on their shoes and pants after plague was found in a dead prairie dog.

The plague is caused by a strain of bacteria that can affect both animals and humans and is naturally occurring throughout the southern Prairies in wildlife such as ground squirrels and mice.

It can be transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected flea.

The park remains open and officials say the risk that the infection will spread to humans is very low.
