For school divisions in Saskatchewan, there have been a myriad of challenges in handling the COVID-19 pandemic. One of the biggest challenges they face at times has been the public health orders put in place by the provincial government, and ensuring they are adhered to at all levels.

When it comes to the enforcement of the public health measures, Education Minister Dustin Duncan has been receiving calls to his office about how they have been handled at the division level here in the southeast. He pointed to some possible confusion over a statement made by Premier Scott Moe earlier this month when he said that Saskatchewan wouldn’t be enacting stricter measures as other provinces have. That statement may have been interpreted by some parents that the measures in place were actually being lifted.

“Public health orders, like the mandatory indoor masking policy, it’s still in place,” Duncan clarified. “That hasn’t changed at this point, so I know that they are following that.”

Duncan also expressed his gratitude for the school divisions, knowing they have been handling a lot in terms of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“They’re responding to situations that may come up from time to time when there is maybe a lack of clarity or a lack of understanding or a lack of support from some families or some people to follow the public health orders,” Duncan stated.

“Hopefully we’re close to perhaps the situation improving, but until that time the orders are in place and I’d expect all school divisions across the province to be following them.”
