Kindersley Town Council have rejected a request from Kindersley Minor Ball (KMB) for a liquor license this upcoming season.

The motion was brought forth at council's latest meeting on Monday evening. KMB approached town administration for the approval to operate a licensed patio bar during Fertile Valley Baseball League (FVBL) games. The organization would have teamed up with the operator for the lounge at the West Central Events Centre (WCEC) to operate the bar through the town's license.

According to the request, the purpose of the inquiry is to attract more residents to league games by enhancing the current experience. The request also indicates a risk of offering the option to buy and sell alcohol to attendees, which is the topic councillors addressed during the meeting.

Councillor Ken Francis expressed his disapproval of the request and how it had been made by KMB. He explained his concerns with the inquiry including how there is a midget team which competes in the FVBL, and the risks which go along selling alcohol at certain events.

Mayor Rod Perkins and Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Bernie Morton compared the situation of selling alcohol in the WCEC's lounges to the patio endorsement request. Morton explained how alcohol is kept in a concealed environment and cameras are on-site. After further discussion from council, the motion was brought forth by Mayor Perkins for the voting process. The motion was defeated after council voted 3-1 against the request.

Other highlights from the meeting

Councillor Shaun Henry proposed council consider incorporating the Safe Places format created by the City of Swift Current for Kindersley recreational youth programs.

The program is an additional screening process which detects charges or convictions from residents interested in volunteering for youth programs. Henry added how Swift Current's template has been offered to council and administration as a guideline to create their program.

$10,000 from the town's budget has been requested for the administration of the program, but council wants to commit further research into the project before committing.
